Original watercolor, the size of the painting is 9”x12” and with
a mat 2” wide consisting of two layers for a total size of 13”x16”. The colors of the mats
have been carefully selected to complement and enhance the painting.
The mammal is a California Sea Lion. From this painting you can see how flexible these mammals are. On the front
flippers nails are only rudimentary. On the hind flippers nails are present on the middle 3 digits. The nails are
set back from the edge so they have to fold
the edge down to scratch anything. In San Francisco, California at Pier 39, a commercial/retail pier was invaded several years
ago by sea lions using their docks as a
haul out spot. The number of animals has gotten as high as in the low
900’s. Pier 39 found that instead of being a nuisance, they made them become one of the most visited spots in The
City.
