The echium grows into large irregular mounds with its flower clusters standing
out dramatically, well above the foliage. Big blue-purple to rose tones flower spikes stand at eye level or higher. One
plant can either have single color flowers or the range of colors. It grows in full sun and does well in dry, poor soil. When these stunning flowers are in bloom they add a new theatrical dimension to many coastal scenes. They are also
excellent for sea coast gardens. I came upon this group of plants at a curve in the road on Highway 1,
before the road drops down to almost sea level as it goes around Bolinas Bay and Lagoon. The lagoon is in the painting
in the distance. Harbor seals give birth in the lagoon’s nature preserve.
