Ritzy, a rare and beautful female Guadalupe fur seal, made a dramatic
recovery at The Marine Mammal Center. Still showing scars from the net that was entangled around her neck and had caused
her to strand, Ritzy was released along with two female California sea lions, Toothpick and Daddy-O, two months
after her rescue. Because her species is considered threatened and she was far from her natural territory
of Guadalupe Island off Baja, Mexico, Ritzy was fitted with a satellite transmitter to monitor her movements. The transmitter was programmed to register Ritzy's activities for short periods
of time so that we could gather data over a longer interval. A chart shows her travels over a two-month period. She was released
near Pebble Beach in Monterey County. From there, her most western-recorded position was 300 miles off the coast. She
traveled at least 204 miles north and 36 miles south of her original release point. Ritzy was one or two years old
when she stranded. For someone so young, it is amazing to see how far she traveled.
