Depending on the condition of the animal, The Marine Mammal Center will
sometimes put an animal on 24-hour watch before attempting a rescue. This is often the case with Pacific harbor seal
pups that are left alone on the beach while their mother goes out to forage. While The Center has been able
to improve the formula given to the pups at the hosipital, a pup's best chance for survival is remain with its
mother. When I was assessing Tchmil, I could see he was longer and had more teeth than a newborn. I called for help,
and he was rescued and in the hospital at The Marine Mammal Center within few hours.
The other animal
is Tchmil at his release. I had the pleasure of opening his gate and took a picture of him as he looked back one last
time before heading for the ocean. While Tchmil was at The Center, he went from 19 pounds to 76 pounds. As you can
see by his new build, he enjoyed his food. I worked in the Harbor Seal Hospital that winter on Monday night shift
and got to see him develop into a robust boy during the almost three months he was he was with us.
